Fonner Park scores a million dollar day, but they’re not trotting to the winner’s circle just yet. ... CEO Chris Kotulak said, “We had an all-time record handle at Fonner Park of more than $1.3 million. That should sound like fantastic news, but I've never been more melancholy in explaining the all-time record is not a big deal.” That’s because most of those wagers came from out of state, and Kotulak explains Fonner Park only gets three percent of the cut.

A Lancaster County District Court hearing set for Tuesday on a request to block Fonner Park from installing historical horse racing terminals has been postponed, according to court staff. No new court date had been set in the case pitting the Nebraska Attorney General's Office against the Nebraska State Racing Commission over its approval of the controversial terminals.

A hearing has been scheduled in Lancaster County District Court for Tuesday to consider the future of historical horse racing machines in the state of Nebraska. In January, the Nebraska Attorney General's Office asked a judge to nullify the State Racing Commission's decision to allow historical horse racing at Fonner Park in Grand Island.

Fonner Park CEO Chris Kotulak makes strong argument for historical racing machines

The battle over historical racing machines at Fonner Park will continue on Tuesday. A hearing is scheduled in district court in Lincoln to hear the case against historical racing machines brought by Attorney General Doug Peterson in support of a temporary injunction keep the machines out of Fonner Park. New Fonner CEO Chris Kotulak has been a big supporter of historical racing as something that would give a big boost to horse racing in Nebraska. Over and over again, Kotulak has stressed that in his view historical racing machines are legal. “Historical horse racing is fully parimutuel and anyone who has fought that fact has lost,” Kotulak said. “Plus, slot machines are illegal in Nebraska and I would never undertake in anything illegal.”
